The Balancing Act

I’d like to start out by saying I am extremely sorry that it has taken so long for me to write another blog. Life. Is. Busy. Starting today, though, I refuse to let that be an excuse. I need to allow this blog to be a priority in my life, which means I need to start making the time to do it.

So… what have I been doing lately that’s been causing me to be so busy? Let’s see… Birthdays, Running, Weddings, Summerfest, Vacations, Work, Crossfit… etc, etc. There’s been a lot going on man. Summers are busy – sometimes overwhelmingly busy. Which leads me to the blog topic for today: Balance.

I kind of touched on this in a previous blog post, but since it wasn’t the main subject I figured it was OK for me to write about it again. If you don’t feel like listening to me rant, there’s a little “x” at the top right hand side of the screen – click it ;).

I’ve been running around like crazy lately. I went to North Dakota. I went to Colorado. I visited a friend and drove 4 hours to get there. I went to a surprise engagement party. I went to 2 concerts. I’ve played volleyball games. I’ve gone mini golfing. I’ve drank too much, eaten too much, and slept too little. But here’s the thing: I haven’t missed a single workout throughout all of it. I have become a little more relaxed about my food intake and a lot more relaxed about my alcohol intake but hey. It’s summer, there’s a lot going on, and sticking to a strict food plan is hard. I’m not saying I can’t do it, because I absolutely can, but I’ve decided to let myself enjoy the summer, the parties, the cookouts and focus less on obsessing over calories. I still watch what I eat, don’t get me wrong. I stick to Paleo probably 75% of the time, but I’ve allowed myself to have the cupcake, or the chips and salsa, and let me tell you – it’s been a great decision.

As far as my weight goes, no, I really haven’t gained any. I have always fluctuated 2-3 pounds in either direction on the scale, and that’s been pretty consistent. I’m still running two times a week, going to Crossfit 3 times a week, random gym cardio once a week and taking one day off; just like I normally do. I prioritize my exercise because I don’t want to ruin the progress that I’ve made over the past couple of months. I don’t want to lose muscle or endurance.

I know people who are SO STRICT with themselves about their diet and all it does is ruin them. Focusing on something that much – saying no to going out to eat with your friends or not giving into your cravings once in awhile will drive you crazy. It’ll straight up make you miserable, trust me – I’ve been there. There has to be a balance between the two. Go out with your friends, but make a healthier choice for dinner. Have that cupcake if it’s all you can think about for 3 hours. Listen to your body and make yourself happy.

If I can eat out 3 days a week and stress less about my food intake, all while not gaining any weight, why wouldn’t I do that? Yes I’d like to lose more weight, but the timing has to be right and now is not the right time. You have to find the median. Don’t go overboard with your eating habits but at the same time don’t make yourself crazy trying to control them.
